A standard ride quality analysis uses a variety of
straightedge lengths to help determine the ride quality of the pavement’s surface profile.
Typically, a shorter straightedge is used as discussed in the FAA AC 150/5370E and ICAO’s Annex 14.
The results of this straightedge analysis helps identify the pavement’s smoothness at the time of
survey. A longer straightedge is used to help identify deviations that may affect aircraft ride
quality. For this, APR uses a 100-foot (33-meter) straightedge with a 1-inch (25mm) allowable
deviation. Our experience has shown that commercial aircraft have the tendency to respond to
deviations 1-inch (25mm) and larger.
