Case Study

In August, 2001, we worked with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PA) engineers to find a suitable repair design on Runway 1-19 at the intersection with Runway 6-24.

In June 2001, we completed a standard smoothness assessment of Runway 1-19. This was after an asphalt overlay in June 2000. The objectives of the study were to determine the initial smoothness after the overlay, and establish a baseline profile for comparison with future measurements in accordance with the PA’s pavement management efforts...

From modeling combat aircraft operating from bomb-damaged runways to predicting the ride quality of 747-400 aircraft performing a takeoff operation on a newly paved runway, APR Consultants, Inc. has led the way to accurately evaluate pavements for ride quality. Founded in 1994, we brought a unique capability to the airfield pavement industry. Tony Gerardi, APR’s founder, developed aircraft simulation for the United States Air Force. Upon retiring from the USAF in the early 1990’s, Tony enhanced his earlier work by adapting the program to run on a PC rather than a large mainframe computer.

Over the years, we have continuously improved the products and services we offer to the airfield pavement industry. In 1994, we released our first software product entitled Takeoff©. As the name implies, it simulated aircraft performing a takeoff operation on measured profile data. Soon after came the program Landing© and the utility programs Fix©, Create©, Repair© and Reverse©. In 1997, these programs were combined into a Windows© compatible software suite entitled APRas©. This software was later adapted to evaluate road and highway pavements.

While refining our software products, we also matured our consulting service practices. This was done with the development of the Auto Rod and Level™. Recognizing the need to obtain accurate profile data that can capture all the grade changes and event amplitudes, regardless of wavelength, we set out to develop this device. This unit has proven to be the most effective means of obtaining the true profile data needed to identify the pavement’s ride quality.

Our goal for the future is to expand our client services in both the airfield pavement and roads/highways pavement services market. We believe that the next five years will be instrumental in how the industry looks at pavement smoothness, how it is measured and how the ride is quantified. Through continuous improvement, creativity and our pursuit of innovative technology, we at APR will contribute greatly to this evolution of pavement analysis.
