Case Study

In August, 2001, we worked with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PA) engineers to find a suitable repair design on Runway 1-19 at the intersection with Runway 6-24.

In June 2001, we completed a standard smoothness assessment of Runway 1-19. This was after an asphalt overlay in June 2000. The objectives of the study were to determine the initial smoothness after the overlay, and establish a baseline profile for comparison with future measurements in accordance with the PA’s pavement management efforts...

When a new paving project is complete, often a highway pavement owner and paving contractor will have differing opinions on the acceptance of the final product. Sometimes the results of a California Profilograph or International Roughness Index (IRI) analysis will show that the pavement failed to meet certain specifications and the pavement owner will often fail the entire pavement. The FHWA or State DOTs will also sometimes withhold funding on paving projects where the pavement doesn’t meet these California Profilograph or IRI standards. We offer a solution to resolve this dispute. We analyze pavements using sophisticated computer models that simulate vehicles traversing the pavement. This, combined with our engineering expertise, will show exactly how vehicles will respond to the pavement and whether or not the pavement should pass or fail. If the pavement has areas that fail, we have the ability to show the contractor and owner exactly where the pavement fails and describe how to remedy the pavement to ensure safe vehicle usage prior to opening.
