Case Study

The New Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok Island (HKIA) is said to be one of the largest public works projects in history. Constructing HKIA was such a massive project because the island/airport had to be built literally from the ground up.

Even though every effort was made to minimize settlement, HKIA engineers knew that through the course of time and use, settlement would occur. The objective was to minimize differential settlement and to track the pavement’s profile as the pavement settled...

When you have pavement rehabilitation or new pavement construction, part of that project should always be to accept the pavement or require remediation. APR has experience in accepting pavement from a smoothness point of view. In addition, we can develop customized smoothness criteria for your project during the RFP development. Then, when the project is complete or at any phase during the construction, our technicians can measure and evaluate the smoothness. We can also compare the measured profile to the design profile, to find any areas where the grade changes differ from the design. If the pavement does not meet the stated criteria, We can recommend specific areas for remediation, and the amount of material to be removed. If you prefer, we can use an inertial-based type profiler and simply give you the International Roughness Index (IRI) and Profilograph Index (PI) numbers for each 1/10 mile section of pavement.
